There are websites that pay people for credit card information so they can resell it to others. People who "sell" card information can be sales clerks, waiters, anyone who has manually held your card so they can write down the information and sell it, including the security number on the back, sadly.

Fortunately, we never request your card information nor do we store it on our server or in our database. All transactions are handled encrypted and securely between you, your bank and our secure provider.

I suggest using an application such as Quicken where you can set up your charge account within Quicken and daily download recent transactions to verify that they were made by you. We have been purchasing items on the internet for years and have never had any problems. Frankly, I feel more secure about purchasing online via a secure encrypted transaction than I do about handing my card to a complete stranger.

Here are some sites that talk about credit card fraud and how to avoid it....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_card

The above article says:

"Most Internet fraud is done through the use of stolen credit card information which is obtained in many ways, the simplest being copying information from retailers, either online or offline. There have been many cases of crackers obtaining huge quantities of credit card information from company databases. It is not unusual for employees of companies that deal with millions of customers to sell credit card information to criminals.

Despite efforts to improve security for remote purchases using credit cards, systems with security holes are usually the result of poor implementations of card acquisition by merchants. For example, a website that uses SSL to encrypt card numbers from a client may simply email the number from the webserver to someone who manually processes the card details at a card terminal. Naturally, anywhere card details become human-readable before being processed at the acquiring bank is a security risk. However, many banks offer systems such as ClearCommerce, where encrypted card details captured on a merchant's webserver can be sent directly to the payment processor."

Notice in the above paragraph, a credit card provider who receives your details securely, yet turns around and processes it insecurely is still a risk. That is why we NEVER ask for your card information via email or over the phone. We want you to be secure in your process. When our members make payments on our site, we direct you to our secure processors, who handles your transaction securely through encryption. Versign and Paypal have a high reputation for security. No one at those companies ever sees your information either, it is then sent securely to your bank. So your card information is passed using high encryption securely between you, our processor and your bank. Never do we see it, nor do we store it.

Another article I read discusses the practice of card providers who sell your card information to others. I find it hard to believe, but I think it's worth mentioning in case it is true.

As stated before, we never collect your card information, and therefore we don't sell it. Nor do we ever display or sell your email address or any information about you.

I don't wish to alarm you. I believe that the internet is a safe place to do business, and I believe that there are plenty of reputable card providers out there.

The above listed article provides some instructions on protecting your privacy.

God bless,
Nannette
